Holiday Hair with Flair!

Part 33 in a series by Karen A. Stevenson, President, Studio K Salon

Here we are again, holidays in full swing!  Time to analyze your appearance prior to the company Christmas party, family get-together and the New Year Bash!

Looks for the coming year will be easy, carefree, low maintenance less placed.  You will continue to see whispy soft lines mixed with blunt harder lines, hairstyles that flow with your natural hair’s tendency, not fighting what you have.

Texture perms diffused to give soft natural curls, highlights, lowlights, and dimensional hair, texture, texture, interest, and more texture.

Guys will be wearing more of a razor texture look as well, giving them the slightly uncut look.   Fashion has relaxed and given us all a chance to get out of the ‘box’ of yesterdays looking styles.

Fashion has taken hair to a new level of understanding.  Convenience, easily obtained exceptional looks that are great for the corporate office as well as a night out dancing.  Free flowing and feminine, layered textures, and tossed.  Hair has spunk, spirit, and sass.

If you’ve not tried a razor cut, maybe this holiday season you should give it a try.  Before you go to a salon and request a razor cut, however, let’s get educated about razors.   There are several types of razors that are strictly metal; the blade is metal, as well as the guard over the razor.  This particular razor is not friendly to your hair.  It snags, pulls, and strips the hair causing fraying ends, and a frizzy look.  You do not want your hairdresser to use this type of razor.

The type of razor you can feel comfortable with is one that is coated with a molded on, non-detachable silicone guard.  When tested on the back of your hand it will feel soft, will slide without cutting the skin and does not have any metal guard whatsoever.  This is a safe razor for your hairdresser to use on your hair.

It is wise for you to see if your hairdresser sprays any razor cutting spray on your hair to aid the silicone guarded razor to slide on the hair easier thus making the cut smooth, easy, and non-harming to the hair.

Lastly, if the razor pulls too much when your hairdresser is cutting your hair, they may need to change their blade. If it tends to pull, ask your hairdresser if they’ve changed the blade lately.

If you haven’t tried a razor cut in the past year or two, or if your hair has the same style as it has had for the past two years or more, maybe it is time to consider something new and fresh such as a razor cut. They are excellent for allowing hair to fall where it should naturally, it takes out bulk, removes width, gives texture as well as shatters hair in a fashionable way.

The idea behind a new hairstyle is to give you an updated look, and to get you out of the box you may have placed yourself in.  Something to think about when you do change your hairstyle is to re-train yourself how you blow dry or style your hair.  Obviously if it is a new hairstyle, it needs to be treated differently.  You cannot get a new hairstyle then go back to the same old habits you have had.  One other thing to remember is you may need different finishing products to obtain the right look you are hoping for.  Products are at least half of the end result of obtaining the styles of 2005.

The objective is to look not good, but GREAT.  Not to look ho-hum but to look FABULOUS.  If you struggle with looking ordinary, it is time to make the decision to change.  The spring in your step, looking alive, the smile that you give people, and the confident eye contact will show through if you allow yourself the gift of freeing up your new self for the New Year.
