Feng Shui Hair

Part 6 in a series by Karen A. Stevenson, President, Studio K Salon

Ever hear of one of the recent buzz words ‘Feng Shui’?  It is a word to describe various things, however, let’s  focus for a moment on feng shui in which a person makes their home as harmonious and as comfortable as possible.  Most people intuitively use feng shui without knowing it.  I am sure you have had the experience of walking into a room and feeling that everything was ‘just right’, or positioned correctly, or flowing…..  You probably have also experienced the opposite, where it didn’t feel ‘quite right’.  In the first case, the feng shui of the room was good.  In the second scenario, the room could be adjusted internally just a slightly different way, and it would turn the room that didn’t feel so ‘right’ into a room that felt harmonious and wonderfully comfortable.

Likewise, could one argue there is such thing as a feng shui for hair??  It may be stretching it a bit….or is it?  Literally hundreds of clients per week come into Take 5 Hair & Co.  Out of those hundreds, we experience numbers of new clients that are frustrated, unhappy, not feeling ‘right’ or ‘harmonious’ with their hair.  They may feel that the color isn’t working for them, or the cut is too hard and argues  with the natural direction or flow of their hair growth.  Looking at feng shui, realizing it is all about a positive experience, it does tell a person ‘who we are’ by the style we chose.  One could chose a professional image, a fun or excitingly dramatic personality appearance, or a soft, feminine look.  Some people are extreme casual personalities and prefer a hairstyle that not only compliments their face, but is as easy as wash, towel dry, scrunch with a few products, and go.

Hair can say we are ‘exciting’, or we are ‘conservative’.  Hair can say we spend hours on it fighting the natural waves or curls, and then have it zap back on us in a moments notice in the humid weather.   Hair can look like we’ve had it cut at a place with inexperienced designers, or one that appears high quality and done with creativity and care.  We can use hair color to enhance what we already have, to create a new and different look that glows with harmonious flavor as we add caramel highlights to a newly colored rich, auburn hair.  Adding wheat colors to natural brunettes, brightening highlights on dull blondes.

Today’s salons have such ability to cut those new trendy styles that appear chopped, razored, and flared at the bottom, angled at the neckline, or easy to style sassy short cuts.  There is such excitement in hair this year!

Likening it to a room being decorated, one must first deal with the canvas of the walls.  What overall look do you wish to achieve?  Are you going to paint them?  What texture would you use?  What about wall paper?  What condition are the existing walls?  Furniture is always important.  Will the pieces you have fit?  How will you place them?  What about accent rugs?  Pictures?  Paintings?  What will you do for lighting?  Will it be incandescent lighting or florescent?   You certainly cannot force furniture that won’t fit, or place too many pieces into a room, nor can you position them in ways that simply don’t ‘flow’.

So goes hair.  Your hair has texture, feel, flow, rhythm, it has a directional desire.  Hair has dullness or brightness in color.  You have the option of adding color or highlights.  One must not desire a haircut that won’t fit, or won’t ‘work’ for your face, or your overall hair texture.  Your hair must feel right and be appropriate for the type of look you wish to achieve.   Fighting your hair will not only cause you many days of not feeling ‘right’, but it will also cause you to not look your best, not to ‘flow’ correctly.  Fighting your hair, it will eventually argue back with you if it is strong willed enough to spring out of the two hours of blow drying and curling that you did to try to change it’s true self.

We are all such busy people these days.  So much to do, so many things to see, why spend so much time fighting your hair?  Styles are so free flowing and so exciting this year.  Isn’t it time to create the harmony, the beauty, the awesome color that your hair deserves?  You will feel better, younger, more attractive, freer.  If you haven’t done it already, how about making a point to determine yourself to gain a hair design that is filled with your personality, with harmony, and with the concept of feng shui.
