It takes 10 seconds for someone to form an opinion of you. |

|
First impressions are important ...
|
Did
you know that the people that you meet are creating observations and making
judgments about you and your character from the first moment they lay eyes on
you? They are checking out your dress, your jewelry, your facial expression,
your hair, hands, body language, and your overall demeanor. Studies have shown
that within the first 10 seconds a person has already formulated 11
or more judgments about you. This is something to consider as you analyze what
type of image you wish to project each day.
Your 'image' is one of the most important
assets you own. At the very onset of meeting someone, your image is being
observed and evaluated. It is very easy to detect high or low self-esteem
in a person. If you present yourself with confidence and poise, you will
have a much better chance of achieving success in life. Being unsure of
yourself or of your appearance can be very harmful to your image.
|
What should I think about? ...
|
|
Your
personal appearance is made up of many things:
make-up, hair, hands, overall fitness, how you hold yourself while walking, how you shake someone’s
hand, whether you have a tattoo, pierced ears, a consistent wardrobe style and
what accessories you wear. Your
personal appearance is the finished product of how you look when you walk out the door
- to a job interview, social function, business luncheon, a golf outing or a weekend get-away.
Many
ideas in the world dictate how one should look. Some trends are good ones, here to stay. Others will be popular
now but in a year or two may cause you to regret some of
the choices you made. Think very carefully before you get a permanent tattoo, or five piercings
in your left ear and three on your right, a pierced nose or eyebrow. These are all decisions that
could harm you when people form their first impression of you. Some day when you are in the business field, you
may regret
having made these irreversible decisions.

Going for an interview? ...
|
| |
Here
is another
word of caution. Don't go for a professional interview or attend a function
where you are expected to show some glimmer of conservatism and wear more than one ring on each
hand, glitter nail polish, dirt under your unpolished fingernails or clothes that are completely inappropriate for the position you are hoping
to obtain or the impression you would like to make. Actually, depending on
how your overall appearance comes across, you may find you have high, or low
self esteem when you meet someone, because you feel and sense whether you ‘fit in’
or are a ‘sore thumb.’ |
| |
Express yourself, but ...
|
| |
If
you have a wild streak, and like to express yourself in dress, that is fine.
However, there is a place and time for this type of expression.
Consider what image you wish to project as you take care of yourself.
Physical
exercise, walking with confidence, feeling a sense of ‘looking good’ are all
important components to one’s self esteem and acceptance.
You will have
a more positive outlook knowing your outfit looks totally put together from shoes to the
finishing touches of accessories. Educate
yourself, develop your personal dress style and stay consistent throughout
your appearance. These are all
things that Image Educators can help you with.
